The recall issued yesterday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service has people rushing to their freezers to check to see if the chicken they bought might make their family members sick.
According to the press release, the National Steak and Poultry “is recalling approximately 1,976,089 pounds of ready-to-eat chicken products due to adulteration because of possible undercooking, resulting in the potential survival of bacterial pathogens in the products.” This is an extension of the November 23, 2016 release, which included 17,439 pounds of product, for a grand total of 1,993,528 pounds of product being recalled!
“The basis for recalling additional product was discovered on Nov. 28, 2016, when a food service customer complained to the establishment that product appeared to be undercooked.”
A full list of product can be found here. The list includes a variety of ready-to-eat chicken products labelled, “Distributed by National Steak and Poultry, Owasso, OK” and “Hormel.” Dates on the product show that were produced on various dates between August 20, 2016 through November 30, 2016.
While there have been no reported illnesses or deaths reported, this is considered a “Class 1” recall, which means it is “a health hazard situation where there is a reasonable probability that the use of the product will cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”
If you purchased any of the recalled products, you are urged not to consume them, instead they should be thrown away or returned to the store of purchase.
