When this video of middle-schooler Keaton Jones asking bullies to stop harassing him emerged yesterday, the outpouring of love and support for the young man was awe-inspiring. Celebrities, actors, and people from across the country sent support in the form of encouraging words, offers of flights and tickets to big events and even a GoFundMe page opened to help the family make Christmas extra-special for Keaton. In case you missed it, here’s Keaton’s video, taken by his mother.
The video is difficult to watch, particularly in light of all we know about teen suicide rates today. It’s no wonder so many cared and looked for ways to help. There’s even a compilation of celebrity social media posts (from Justin Bieber, Lebron James, Rihanna and more) offering encouraging words for the young Tennessee boy.
Today, however, the storyline has changed a bit as Keaton’s mother is accused of racism and of setting up fake accounts to take more money from generous strangers.
Real or not, the story of the effect bullying had on a young man got the country talking about a serious issue in our schools and beyond. And, there will certainly be more to come on this topic.
What are your thoughts? Do the alleged actions of Keaton’s mother change the way you feel about his video? Let us know in the comments.
