The Food Prep Miracle

When I come across a nugget of information that’s going to benefit other people, I love to pay that knowledge forward. Makes me giddy, if I’m being totally honest. Because if a tip or a practical life hack or a piece of advice can make someone’s life easier, then I just think it needs to be shared—especially when said information can help save someone time and energy and sanity along the way.

I mean, we all need to eat, right? And that basic need never goes away. Ever. We can’t live without it. So one way or another, whether we live alone or have families and multiple mouths to feed, figuring out what we’re going to eat and then preparing it is one of the primary endless loops we find ourselves on (aside from laundry). Because once we’ve made it through breakfast, we’re headed straight for lunch, followed inevitably by dinner. And with roughly twenty-one meals to consider every week, or ninety-plus meals a month, or a little over a thousand meals a year, that’s a lot to consider. So much so, that it can make the average person who’s got to prepare them wanna vomit.

Of course, the Average Joe or family doesn’t cook meals seven nights a week, so we can shave off about two hundred nights (or more) to account for weekends and odd days when take-out is the only appealing option. But, even after trimming down our real versus actual eating habits, most of us still have an awful lot of planning and shopping and preparing to do most days. And that’s time consuming and emotionally exhausting. But the reality is, it doesn’t have to be all-consuming or overwhelming at all. Believe it or not, there is a way to maximize our time and effort and ensure that we’re not spending hours in the kitchen slaving over the burner to get our meals on the table.

It’s efficient, it’s cost-effective, it saves gobs of time and energy and I only wish I started doing it decades ago. What I’m talking about is meal prepping. And it truly is a miracle, especially if you’re sick of spending all your time thinking about what your next meal is going to be an hour before it’s supposed to be on the table.

Now I know what you’re thinking…you’re thinking that meal prepping is what bodybuilders or personal trainers or dieticians do and because you’re none of those, you couldn’t make it work. Or, maybe you’re thinking it’s too cumbersome or time-consuming or challenging for someone to do on a regular basis. Well, shame on you. Because everyone, and I do mean everyone, has the bandwidth to carve out an hour or two a week to cook up a bunch of healthy, delicious food and stick it all in adorable, symmetrical, colorful Tupperware containers in a tower-sized stack in the fridge. It’s that simple.

See, you’re already going food shopping at least once a week, so all you need to do is put a few minutes of thought into what meals you might want to eat next week and jot those ingredients down on your list. Then, add a multi-pack or two of small plastic containers and lids to your list and look who’s a food prepper!!

After that, it’s all about devoting an hour or two over the weekend to cook and package everything up. The whole week done in one shot. If that ain’t magic, I don’t know what is. And if you really want to enhance the prepping experience, you can get all Zen and add music and wine while you’re cooking as a way of unwinding from the week and getting ahead for the next one. Or, if you have kids, use your food prep time as a way to spend some quality time together, and exploit some cheap child labor to bag up all those snacks and veggies for the week. Good parenting right there.

Just think, in a matter of a couple of hours and with a teeny bit of forethought, you’ll bang out all your meals for the entire week. Oh, and you’ll be eating healthy. And you’ll save buckets of money by eating at home. And you’ll have less stress during the week. And you’ll have more free time during the day.

Let’s put it this way, you’re an idiot if you don’t try this. Sorry, but I just spoon fed you a laundry list of reasons why food prepping is a bonafide miracle and not one single reason why it’s not. So, do yourself this one itty bitty favor on the front end and I swear on a stack of Rubbermaid containers it’ll change the backend forever.
